A practical checklist
Choosing a self-compassion teacher: what to check before you decide
Quick answer: A self-compassion “teacher,” a structured program such as Mindful Self-Compassion, and a “therapist” are three different things. Before choosing, read the exact training-stage label on a profile, confirm which offering it applies to, and check format, cost, and support directly with the teacher or organisation — a directory listing is a starting point, not a guarantee.
Start with the words
Teacher, program, and therapist are not the same thing
A teacher is a person who has completed some level of training and leads sessions, classes, or courses. A program, such as Mindful Self-Compassion, is a structured curriculum that a teacher delivers over a defined number of sessions. A therapist is a mental-health professional who provides psychotherapy, which is a different kind of relationship and scope of practice from an educational class, even when a therapist also has self-compassion training.
A teacher, a structured program such as Mindful Self-Compassion, and a therapist are not interchangeable words, and a title on a profile does not automatically mean the others apply. Read a profile slowly rather than assuming a familiar-sounding word covers everything you are looking for.
Read the fine print
How to read a teacher's training-stage label
Public teacher profiles typically show a training-stage label, such as an early in-training stage, a completed-training stage, a more advanced certified stage, or a teacher-trainer stage. A separate psychotherapy-focused pathway may use its own stages, such as in training, informed, or certified as a therapist. These labels describe progress along one specific training track for one specific offering — they are not a license, not a universal ranking, and not automatic evidence of clinical qualification.
A label on one track does not carry over to a different track. Someone trained to teach a general self-compassion course is not automatically qualified for a population-specific or therapy-focused offering, and the reverse is also true. If a credential, license, or clinical qualification matters to your decision, verify it directly with the organisation that issued it or with the relevant professional register, rather than relying on a directory label alone.
Before you decide
What to check before you choose
- Issuer. Who trained this teacher and issued their current training stage, and how you can verify that directly with that organisation.
- Scope. Which offering this training stage applies to — a general teaching track, a population-specific track, or a psychotherapy-focused track — since a label for one does not automatically apply to another.
- Format. Whether sessions are live online or in person, the group size, and how much home practice or reading is expected.
- Language and location. The language taught in, the time zone or region, and whether the schedule realistically suits you.
- Accessibility. Captions, recordings, seating, or other accommodations you may need.
- Fees and cancellation. The exact price, refund policy, and cancellation terms before you pay anything.
- Privacy. How registration details, shared reflections, or any session recordings are handled.
- Support and escalation boundary. What the teacher can and cannot help with if something difficult comes up, and where you would turn for additional support.
Ask about each of these directly with the teacher or organisation; a directory profile is a starting point for your own evaluation, not a substitute for asking.
A public starting point
Using the public teacher directory
Practice Self-Compassion hosts a public directory of teachers who chose to be listed. It shows public profile information and the training-stage filters a teacher selected for their own listing.
Inclusion in the public teacher directory reflects public profile information and the filters a teacher selected — it is not a guarantee of fit, availability, licensure, outcomes, endorsement by Practice Self-Compassion, or real-time accuracy. A profile can change after it was last updated, so confirm current details directly with the teacher before enrolling or paying.

Support boundary
This guide is general education only. It is not a recommendation of any individual teacher. It is not a diagnosis or treatment. It does not guarantee fit or outcomes. A course, teacher, or directory listing is not emergency or crisis support.
